    Neat video Thanks. Is there a problem with expansion. The water coming into my water tank now is cold and when not in use does not expand . but the water in the hose gets very hot when not in use. Is there a risk of a hose or joint bursting? If that happened while I was away from the house any savings would soon be washed away. Any thoughts?

    Hi,
    They estimate because of locked gates etc. in the old days and it can be a pain. In the end, when they finally read the meter, it usually balances out--BUT!!!--We had that happen a few years ago and when they finally read the meter, we had a $200 credit, they blamed it on a faulty meter (worked fine but they replaced) and we had to make several calls to get or money (banked KWH) back. Now that most meters are read digitally - WIFI, the locked gate excuse is a thing of the past.

    Agreed, being on the"levelized" plan is a big mistake, you can get really turned around and if you do have problems with a billing issue, it becomes mathematically vague and rarely will be in your favor. If you are on the plan and switch off, COUNT YOUR KHW over the last year. Also make the switch at the very end of the most used energy cycle. WINTER example. (you have their money or are close to flat) The Program actually works for fixed income people who do not use a lot of power.

    I cannot help but mention this. Utility companies can legally steal from you. They can legally go months without checking your meter. Its called estimating your bill. They compare that month to the year before. Whats worse is when you see your bill going up and you're not doing anything different. They blame it on hotter or colder weather. They just want you on budget billing so they can save money paying the meter guy. Please continue to produce this invaluable information.

    Thank you, it is pretty simple. The problem is, most people want the same thing without sacrifices. The only draw back is timing and no sun days. We shower during the day 5-6pm. But all day we have hot water if there is sun. Then at night we plug in the water heater if needed. Sometimes we go 3-4 days without plugging it in. Last electric bill was $10 cheaper than last year. Considering or utility rate hike is 15% higher for the same KWHs it is a nice difference.

    Let me make some uggestions to you. First, the electric water heater should be istalled above the solar water heater this way the water in the tank will allways circulate by convection, cold water is heavier than hot water by volume. The way it is now you might even get some of the hot water from the electric heater to rise to the solar heater unless you have a check valve.The way it is now, any hot water in the hose will stay in the hose untill you use water and you waste sun light.

    Years ago, I made a solar water heater out of a disgarded water tank without the insulation. Put water connections on it, ran the lines to the gas HW tank in the house. Painted the tank black, and put the tank in a oversized box, with one side plexiglassed, other sides insulated and painted black also. Had a insulted lid on it, so during the day we would open it, at night, we would close it to keep the heat in. Worked good until a hole rusted through the tank after 4 years of use.

    naive, no. If oil is only used to build stuff vs. burning then what difference does it make. Texas oil wells and recycled car engine oil alone could handle all the needs for this country while we drive on alternative energy. Furthermore, new black hose from 3 companies including Goodyear are 99% post consumer from used tires etc. So, NO NEW dinosaur juice. What is naive, think the current energy program is good for anyone--- unless you are in the oil business. Thanks for the comment.

    That is a good idea. Actually 1/2" CPVC. Fits inside 3/4" Regular PVC perfectly (very tight, but oil works). The PVC companies make sure pipes do not fit well together but CPVC fits in the next size up. You can even glue them together and they work better than any fitting.

    Dirt is cool, even on hot days it's much cooler than the temperatures produced by solar water heating. Why not use a casing pipe and insulate the pvc leading to your heater. Use a two inch pipe and insert the 3/4 or 1/2 inch pipe you used with insulation wrapped around it

    Now, to my intended comment. I didnt get the bit about glycol (antifreeze), i presume it doesnt get mixed with the water supply, but what i was going to say was, if you enclose you tubing in a glass or perspex covered frame, it will reduce any winter cooling drastically but be aware of the effects of cold water on very hot glass (cracking, shattering, even exploding) and if necessary, use a heatproof glass or good external window glass. recycled double-glazing is great for this. :o)

    Set your lens a few inches short of the optimal focal length, this provides a larger, weaker heat area. For cooking, I use a 53" x 31" Spot lens that heats a 12" cast iron pan to 300 degrees F in 30 seconds. Set 10 inches short of the optimal focal length or mirror bounce for bottom heating.

    And... don't forget to wear your shades :o)

    She let it run for a few minutes before she took the shower and it was also early and partly cloudy. On a solid sunny day, you cannot place your hand under it. I got 25 gallons at 115 degrees AVERAGE. The first 10 gallons was 135 f then dropped to about 100 then 90.
