Why is this tutorial so long? I hate to leave people wondering "why...". I like to explain everything I do and why I do it. Only this way are people more knowledgeable about what they are doing!

  • Nice Stuff, one more problem i wanted...

    Hi,
    One last thing that i wanted to add, when you are dual booting XP & Vista there is a problem that happens (when ever you boot into XP) it is going to delete/write over/erase all but the very latest VISTA recovery files. This is a known issue to Microsoft.

    They and others have posted a work around which essentially makes it so that XP can no longer "SEE" the Vista OS. This means that you lose the ability to write to the Vista partition or drive from within XP...but hey, all your restore files are not automatically deleted. Lost of forums address this as well as Microsoft themselves but Vista SP1 & XP SP3 did not fix this issue and from the sound of things they will not be.
    After you "fix" the situation you are still able to see XP from within Vista and modify things so its only a slight inconvenience... You can use a mutual storage partition or Drive that the two share or a thumb/usb drive etc. to transfer files back & forth. FYI

    You can try installing Fedora first, then Ubuntu. Remember on my tutorial how I show that Ubuntu recognizes that you already have Windows installed? I'm not positive, but it may recognize that you have Fedora installed and will add it to the GRUB menu.

    Hey, I installed fedora 8 on a new disk ... i have ubuntu on an older disk .. do you know how to dual boot ubuntu and fedora installed on separate disks?

    Also .. I didn't know you could boot off a logical partition

    To be honest, I don't know. It's possible, but after reading up a bit on the Ubuntu forums, I came to discover that it's a bit troublesome. You may want to check out the Ubuntu forums and search for different RAID search terms to see what comes up.

    dude did u try gOS linux, its based on ubuntu as well, but has a whole new experience altogether. Try the space version, really recommend it.

    Yes, it does apply. But that's a very good question. Personally, I've never attempted this before, but after some quick searching, I came across an article that talks about exactly what you want to do. Since I cannot post URLs here, I'll send you a message with the article link. I do recommend that you backup all of your personal files first before you do this since I cannot guarantee that it will work. But it's a great place to start!

    Thanks for the tutorial, u sure know ur stuff!! I wonder if u can help me tho... I've got Vista & I want 2 install XP, but i noticed that u said that the earliest OS has to be installed 1st in order not to confuse the boot up config. would this apply 2 me or can I install XP as planned on my new, empty partition? Many thanks...:-)
