      The Harrier is unique and indicative of Britsh ingenuity. You Americans are sound people, but you should count yourselves lucky that Germany and Britain did work together in WW2 as Hitler wanted - The USA would now be car park for BNW's and Rolly Royces - LOL.

      Lightly armed it can operate vertically from a forest, the snow, your roof, your back garden. When empty and pilot tired he can land anywhere and if on the carrier do it straight down this time with no payload. It can be used off the back of a destroyer with a fraction of the Carriers running costs.

      I have also seen them take off vertically fully loaded, they only use the ramp to shorten the take off and to save fuel, like on carriers thats all.

      Thus again as I said a shorter runway can be used even if horizintally launching so bombed or no runways - no problem. Very versatile unmatched and from the 60's. Not many people know they can VIFF (vector in forward flight) and outmanouver any fighter because the jets vector nossles are on the sides not at the back.
